PREFACE

    Ⅰ.Chongqing Statistical Yearbook 2000 is a large annual statistics publication, which reflects various aspects of Chongqing's social and economic development. The yearbook covers not only comprehensive data series of Chongqing's social and economic development, but also the major statistics on 40 districts (counties) in 1999.
    Ⅱ. The yearbook contains 4 chapters of 17 parts, special issue of western region, and the appendix: 1 GENERAL SURVEY CHAPTER, including (1)GeneralSurvey, (2) Population and Employment, (3) Investment in Fixed Assets, (4) Consumption of Energy and Raw Materials, (5) Living Standards and Prices, (6) Urban Planning and Environmental Protection. 2. SECTOR CHAPTER, including (7) Agriculture, (8) Industry, (9) Construction, (10) Transportation, Postal and Telecommunication Services, (11) Domestic Trade, (12) Foreign Economic Relations, Trade and Tourism, (13) Finance and Insurance, (14) Education, Science, Technology and Culture, (15)Sports, Public Health, Social Welfare and Others. 3. REGION CHAPTER, that is (16) Districts and Counties. 4. ENTERPRISE CHAPTER, that is (17) Enterprises, and SPECIAL ISSUE OF WESTERN REGION, and the APPENDIX appends main data of the state, provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and cities at provincial level, and main social and economic indicators of Taiwan Province, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Macao Special Administrative Region. Explanatory Notes on Main Statistical Indicators are providedat the end of each part.
    Ⅲ. The major data sources of this publication are obtained from annual statistical reports, and some from sample surveys. Statistics on SPECIAL ISSUE OF WESTERN REGION are from statistics bureau of each province (municipality, autonomous region) in western region.
    Ⅳ. The units of measurement used in this yearbook are international standard measurement units.
    Ⅴ. Notations used in this yearbook:
    “…” indicates that the figure is not large enough to be measured with the smallest unit in the table; “(blank)” or “-” indicate that the date not available; “#” indicates that the major items of the total.
    Ⅵ. Thanks for enthusiastic assistances of many units and individuals in the process of edition and translation. Due to our limited level and hasty time, faults and shortage are unavoidable. We ask for criticism and comments from personalities of various circles.
