Total population refers to the total number of people alive at a certain point of time within a given area.
The annual statistics on total population is taken at midnight, the 3lst of December.
Urban Population and Rural Population are classified, in general, with the permanent population.
Urban Population refers to the population living in areas under the jurisdiction of cities or towns.
Rural Population refers to the population of counties excluding those living in towns.
City refers to cities established with the approval of the central government.
Town refers to towns established with the approval of the governments of province, autonomous region, or municipality directly under the central government. Prior to 1963, a town was defined as an area with more than 2000 permanent residents, of which 50% or more were non-agricultural population; A revision of the definifion was made in 1964. By the new definition, a town was an area with more than 3000 permanent residents, of which 70 % or more were non-agricultural population or an area with more than 2500, but lower than 3000 permanent residents, of which 85% or more were non-agricultural population. Further adjustment was made in 1984: a town is defined as: (1) an area being the location of county-level government agency, or (2) a township with a total population less than 20000, where the non-agricultural population of the location of a township government exceeds 2000;or (3) a township with a total population more than 20000, where the proportion of the
non-agricultura population to the total population of the location of a township government is greater than 10%; or (4) a remote area, mountainous area, small-sized mining area, small harbor, tourism area, or border area with non-agricultural population less than 2000.
Birtb Rate (or Crude Birth Rate) refers to the ratio of the number of births to the average population during a certain period of time (usually a year), which is often expressed in‰. The following formula is used:
Birth Rate = Number of Births /Average Number of Populationx 1000‰
Number of Births refers to live births, i. e. the births when babies had showed any vital phenomena regardless of the length of pregnancy.
Annual Average Number of Population is the average of the number of population at the beginning of the year and that at the end of the year. Sometimes it is substituted for with the mid-year population.
Death Rate ( or Crude Death Rate) refers to the ratio of the number of deaths to the average population (or mid-year population) during a certain period of time (usually a year), which is often expressed in‰ .

Natural Growth Rate of Population refers to the ratio of natural increase in population (number of births minus number of deaths) in a certain period of time (usually a year) to average population (or mid-year population) of the same period, which is often expressed in ‰. The following formulas are applied:

Natural Growth Rate of Population=Birth Rate - Death Rate
Employed Persons refers to the persons who are engaged in social labour and receive remuneration payment or earn business income, including:
(1) total staff and workers,
(2) re-employed retirees,
(3) employers of private enterprises,
(4) employers of individual economy,
(5) employed persons in private enterprises and individual economy,
(6) employed persons in the enterprises in the urban areas,
(7) employed persons in the rural areas,
(8) other employed persons (including teachers in the schools run by the local people, people engaged in religious profession and the
sericemen, etc.)
This indicator reflects the actual utilization of total labour force during a certain perod of time and is oftem used for the research on China's economic affairs and national power.
Persons employed in various units refer to all the persons working in government agencies of various levels, political and party organizations, social organizations, and enterprises and institutions and receiving payment, including staff and workers, reemployed retirees, teachers in schools run by the local
people, foreigners, and Chinese compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Working in Various units.
This indicator reflects the total number of laborers actually engaged in production or other operations in various units.
Economically Active Population refers to the population, the members of which are aged 16 and over, capable to
labour, participating in or desirous to participate in the social and economic activities, including employed persons and unemployed persons.
Staff and Workers in State-owned Economic Units refer to the persons who work in the state - owned economic units or their attached units and are listed in their payrolls, excluding the retired persons invited to work in the units again, teachers in the schools run by the local people and foreigners and persons coming from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and working in the state - owned economic units.
Persons Employed in Private Enterprises and Employed Individuals in Urban Areas: Persons employed in private enterprises refer to the persons employed in the private enterprises which have been registered at the departments of industrial and commercial administration and are situated at a county town (i.e. a town where the county government is located) for business operation or at urban areas with the level higher than a county town. The employed individuals in urban areas refer to persons who hold the certificates of residence in urban areas or have resided in the urban areas for a long time and have been registered at the departments of industrial and commercial administration and approved to be engaged in individual industrial or commercial business, including self - employed persons as well as helpers and hired labourers who work in the individual households engaged in industrial or commercial business.
Registered Unemployed Persons and Registered Unemployment Rate in Urban Areas: The registerede unemployed persons in urban areas refer to the persons who are registered as permanent residents in the urban areas engeged in non-agricultural activities, aged within the range of working age, capable to
labour, unemployed but desirous to be employed and have been registered at the local employment service agencies to apply for a job. Registered unemployment rate in urban areas refers to the ratio of the number of the registered unemployed persons to the sum of the number of employed persons and the registered unemployed persons. The formula is as follows:
Registered unemployment rate in urban areas=the number of the registered unemployed persons÷(the number of employed persons + the number of the registered unemployed persons)×100%
Staff and Workers refer to the persons who work in (and receive payment
therefrom) enterprises and institutions of state ownership, collective ownership, joint ownership, share holding, foreign ownership, and ownership by entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and other types of ownership and their affiliated units.
Contract Staff and Workers refer to the persons who are employed by enterprises and institutions by contract signed for a fixed term, non-fixed term or a term of a project according to the regulations in the Document No.77 (1986) and the Decree No. 99 promulgated by the State Council.
Staff and Workers of Collective Owned Units in Urban Areas referto the persons who work in collective owned units in urban areas and their administration departments and receive payment
therefrom.
Staff and Workers in Units of Other types of Ownership refer to those who work in (and receive payment
thereform) enterprises and institutions of joint ownership, share holding, foreign ownership, and ownership by entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.Total Wages of Staff and Workers refer to the total remuneration payment to staff and workers in various units during a certain period of time.
The calculation of total wages is based on the total remuneration payment to the staff and workers.
Therefore, all the wages and salaries and other payments to staff and workers are included in the total wages regardless of their sources, c
ategory, and forms (in kind or cash)Extra Piece Wages refer to the payment to workers for their extra work beyond labour quota,
i. e. total amoumt of piece wages minus standard piece wages. For some enterprises, the standard of piece wage for some workers exceeds their normal payment. In this case , the extra piece wage is still calculated as total amount of wages minus standard picec wages.
Bonus refers to remuneration payment to worker for extra work and for increasing earnings and practicing economy.
Subsidies and Allowances refer to subsidies paid to staff and workers for compensating special or extra labour and allowances paid to staff and workers to offset the impact of inflation on real wages.
Average Wage of Staff and Workers refers to the average wage in money terms per person during a certain period of time for staff and workers in enterprises, institutions, and government agencies, which reflects the general level of wage income during a certain period of time and is calculated as follows:

Retired or Resigned Personnel refers to the persons who have formally gone through the formalities for their retirement or quitting work and enjoy the corresponding treatments.
Insurance and Welfare Funds refers to labour insurance and welfare fund paid by enterprises, organizations and institutions to their staff and workers as well as retired and resigned persons in addition to their wages and salaries.
(1)Insurance and Welfare Funds for Staff and Workers include:
①Medical Care Allowance: It refers to the cost of medical care of staff and workers and their dependent family members who are covered by the medicare system of enterprises, travelling expenses of injured employees to hospital and their per diem subsidies during hospitalization, cost of medical care of employees who are covered by the medicare sysem of institutions and organizations, as well as cost of medicine of employees of enterprises and institutions who are not covered by the medicare system.
②Funeral Expenses and Pensions for Family of the Deceased: They refer to funeral expenses of staff and workers, and pensions and allowance for their dependent family members, as well as subsidies to funeral expenses of staff and workers' dependent family members.
③Subsidies for Living Expenses: They refer to regular or ad hoc subsidies to staff and workers who have difficulties in making ends meet.
④Expenses for Recreational, Sports and Publicity Activities: They refer to actual payment made by enterprises and institutions in recreational, sports and publicity
acivities, excluding training cost.
⑤Subsidies to Collective Welfare Undertakings: They refer to subsidies to the operation of welfare undertakings that can not fully cover their cost, such as public bathrooms, barber shops, laundries, nurseries and kindergartens.
⑥Expenses for Collective Welfare Facilities: They refer to expenses for collective welfare facilities that are spent in line with state regulations, such as the purchase and repair of cooking utensils for canteens, and repair of living quarters of staff and workers, but excluding the expenses for welfare projects that are constructed with self - raised funds.
⑦Family Planning Subsidy:It refers to subsidy and health allowance paid to the one - child family of staff and workers.
⑧Others:They refer to other insurance and welfare funds paid to staff and workers.
(2) Insurance and Welfare Funds for Retired and Resigned Staff and Workers
①Pensions for Retired Veteran Cadres: They refet to pensions and other subsidies paid to retired in line with relevant government documents.
②Pensions for Retirement: They refer to living allowance and other subsidies paid to retired staff and workers in line with the relevant government documents.
③Resignation Allowances for Living Expenses: They refer to living allownce and subsidies paid to resigned staff and workers in line with relevant government instructions.
④Expenses for Medical Care: They refer to the costs for medical treatment, hospitalization and food subsidies in hospitals for retired and resigned staff and workers.
⑤Nursing Cost: It refers to cost for nursing retired or resigned staff and workers who are unable to take care of themselves and need the help from nurses.
⑥Living Subsidy:It refers to living subsidy paid to retired employees in line with the instructions in a 1985 State Council document.
⑦Traffic Subsidy: It refers to the monthly traffic subsidy paid to senior retired staff.
⑧Funeral Expenses and Pensions for Family of the Deceased: They refer to the funeral expenses of retired staff and workers, and pensions and allowance for their dependent family members, as well as subsidies to funeral expenses of retired staff and workers' rsdependent family members.
⑨Other:They refer to other expenses, including moving and settlement allowance, allowance for difficult families, book and newspaper allowance, subsidy for non-staple foods, housing subsidy, water and electricity subsidy, special allowance for staff and workers of national minorities, travelling cost for senior retired staff, etc.
